Visiting the nursery

Be prepared to take some time visiting the nursery. Look around and take in the general atmosphere. Many decisions about childcare are made on the basis of the feel of a place. It may be something that you can't put your finger on, but the place feels right. That's a good sign, but follow it up with a check on the basics too.

Sally Green is the Manager of Toad Hall Nursery near Guildford. 'Very often you know as soon as you walk through the door', she says. 'The way staff greet you, and a friendly approach from everybody you meet, will give you a good first impression.'

A good nursery will understand that you want to be sure that your child will be well cared for and safe. They will want you to ask questions until you are satisfied. When Sally shows prospective parents around the nursery, she expects to be asked lots of questions and is happy to answer them all.
