Starting The Search For A Nursery

You are about to embark on a choice where your child is likely to spend a significant amount of time. You may find the perfect setting and the perfect carer for your child. You may find that this doesn't exist - at least, not within a twenty-mile radius.

If there's one thing that is important when you are choosing childcare, it is having a flexible approach. The priority is quality care. You may have your heart set on a nursery, but if the local ones don't come up to scratch, then you must move on to another choice. You may find that there is a perfectly brilliant childminder in the next road to you. Be open to change.

Of course, what is 'the best' to you may not be the same for everyone else. You may have strong views on whether food prepared for your child is organic, for example. So an hour or so thinking about what is most important to you and your family will be well spent, and you can use it as a checklist when you are considering nurseries. This initial list may trigger off some thoughts for you:

  • Space to play outdoors
  • Traditional or progressive approach
  • Ratio of children to carers
  • Attitudes to behaviour
  • Key worker system in place
  • Pets
  • Amount of television/videos watched
  • Opening and closing times
  • Amount of parental involvement
  • Availability
  • Access by public transport
  • Parking
