Final checks

Wherever you send your child, it's important to check the place out. You want to feel that you are sending them to the right place. The best way of finding out is by asking people who are already using it. Perhaps you could talk to a few of the parents as they are dropping off their children. Alternatively, you could ask the manager if you could telephone one or two of the parents.

Try to visit more than one setting so that you can make comparisons. Also see if you can visit more than one of each type of setting, for the same reasons. You may not realise what could be on offer unless you do a thorough search.

Try to take your child with you, and pay attention to their reaction. Are they drawn into the warm atmosphere? Do the staff approach them and engage their interest?

If possible, make your visit with your partner, or a trusted relative or friend who can help you make a decision. Another pair of eyes and ears can give you extra information.

DO trust your instincts. You know your child best, and you will be able to judge the best place for them. Don't leave anything to chance. With a healthy respect of your gut feelings, and a thorough check on the carers of your choice, you can then leave your child in safety and security.
